本劇沒有故事，只有兩個人物，一個稱為「這主」，另一個稱為「那主」。開始時，「這主」因為火車誤點，信步到了一個藝術館流覽，不料館方未經警告就提前鎖門，將他關在裡面。他徒然抗議之餘，針對當代藝術大發議論，認為藝術家和藝術評論家都是故弄玄虛，欺世盜名，結果導致藝術低落，連累真正的藝術也面臨死亡。隨著這死亡一念，那主（這主的思想投射）出現，逐漸引導這主懸樑自盡，全劇也就此結束。劇名原名是 Le Queteur de la Mort , 由高行健自己撰寫中文版出版，將劇名訂為《叩問死亡》。我們說「死亡叩問」時，一般都表示是生命到了盡頭，但是在這個劇名裡，死亡反而成為被「扣問」的對象，不是主動來訪，勾人魂魄。這個劇名非常妥當，因為全劇的重點正是從各個層面探討死亡的本質。生與死是人生旅程的起點和終站，所以本劇反過來看也在追究生命的終極意義。那主與其說是一個人物，不如視為這主部分思想的投影。他反覆說明的 ...
